Why the name?
Coyote Run? We were out walking the property, building our ranch homes in our mind when we glanced under the trees and saw a coyote sitting on her haunches curiously watching us kick the dirt. She was silent and confident in her camouflage. We continued to walk and looked back, only to find her following us from her brush fort watching our movement. We crossed the creek bed just as two pups tumbled out of the underbrush towards us, obviously tired of following their Mom, pouncing on each other to relieve the boredom. As they rolled towards our feet, their eyes caught ours and they yelped in their awareness, scrambling over each other to race back to the safety of the bush. We laughed at their antics and reveled in our good luck. We glimpsed the three of them running up the cliff wall to a higher vantage point.
She stopped, threw back her head and howled into the sky. She was quickly followed by high pitched youthful howls which ended in playful yips. We imagined it was the song of approval. Immediately their voices were answered by numerous songs radiating from unseen coyotes hiding in their rock fortresses. They were still singing to each other, and to us, as we drove away. Those that live close to coyote say this kind of singing lasts for hours and rival any human song.
So, what else could we have named this place? Coyote Run is committed to honoring all wildlife and has set aside 30% of the land for their protection. We will continually improve the habitat for all of them. Whether deer, hawk, finch or coyote there will be natural protection for them.
